Social Media Giving Day: Giving Donors a Chance to Support the Causes They Love from the Palm of Their Hands

Posted: July 15, 2024 at 7:00 am

Today is Social Media Giving Day, an observation where everyone is encouraged to support charitable organizations or causes by making donations and promoting the good work of nonprofits and individuals.

This day was created by Givver, a platform dedicated to helping nonprofits grow on social media.

Social Media Giving Day is not all about raising money, however. It is also about shining a light on charitable causes that need attention and promoting awareness within communities.

A recent study examining the effects of Social Media Giving Day determined “that investment in and engagement with the organization’s social media presence leading up to Giving Day produces returns in the form of higher donations and a greater number of donors.”

Candid also shared that 55% of people who engage with nonprofits on social media end up taking some form of action within that percentage of people:

  • 59% of people donate money
  • 53% volunteer their time
  • 52% donate clothing, food, or other personal items
  • 43% participate in charitable events in their community

57% of the generated traffic on fundraising campaign pages comes from social media, so it’s easy to understand the importance of nonprofits’ efforts to use social media to inform and promote their cause. However, many fall short and don’t get the social support they need, which is why days like today are crucial to the survival and growth of nonprofit organizations.

Social Media as a Powerful Tool for Your Fundraising Efforts
For nonprofit organizations, social media is a powerful tool for quickly sharing information with anyone in the world. Whether your nonprofit has specific fundraising campaigns or simply wants to share your work and create awareness, social media can help you increase your audience reach. Specifically:

  • Posting is free, allowing you the opportunity to constantly share about your mission.
  • A well-developed strategy can help you keep donors engaged and attract new ones.
  • You can also grow your network of volunteers by requesting assistance through social posts.
  • Some of the platforms let you include a link to your page, allowing social media users a chance to move past the social platform and onto your website.
  • Content can be interactive, allowing audiences to participate and feel more engaged.

Take this day as an opportunity to show your followers what your organization is about and invite them to support your mission through a charitable donation, volunteer work and more. Make sure to use #SocialMediaGivingDay in your posts.
